The best degrees for this

The freelance writer is the future. Have you ever thought about moving to a remote part of the country you live in – with the beach as your view and a pina colada in your hand while you work?

Our way of working is changing. As businesses and employees quickly adapt to a fully remote working model in the aftermath of COVID-19, they are learning to reap the benefits of an agile and distributed workforce. With this change, more than ever, professionals are embarking on their own in the search for greater autonomy and flexible alternatives to traditional employment.

There has been a drastic change in the job postings on the site from permanent to temporary status. Hayden Brown, President and CEO of Upwork, said: “It’s no surprise that freelance is on the rise, especially now that we’ve completely decoupled where we’re working from what we’re working on. ”

Julia Pollak, labor economist at the ZipRecruiter yard, says: “The percentages of increase are alarming.” In some professions, the transition to temporary or self-employed workers is even more brutal. “The share of temporary job vacancies in communications, for example, was only 12% before COVID,” says Pollak. In April of last year, it was four times higher.

If you want the flexibility, independence, and freedom to work in cafes or beach bars rather than offices, here are three degrees to consider for a career in freelance:

Graphic design

Graphic designers work in print and digital media to present information in a way that is both memorable and accessible. They are visual communicators – putting together illustrations, typography, images and animated graphics to create a design piece.

This program provides opportunities to collaborate with creatives from other disciplines with different skills than your own – you will gain a broader understanding of the creative, social and ethical context of contemporary visual culture. Specializations are possible – choose from typography, illustration, branding, packaging, animation, UIUX, digital design or environmental graphics.

Creative writing

Nurture your creative, critical and professional skills as a freelance writer; acquire a foundation in the main genres of fiction, non-fiction and poetry; and being helped to find your own voice – that’s what a degree in this field offers. You’ll also be confident, knowledgeable, and adaptable in today’s creative industries – where writing and editing are essential skills, as are creativity, communication, and critical thinking.

From writing a freelance creative project in your final year to exploring the psychological foundations of creativity, you’ll improve your skills by engaging in a range of hands-on exercises. You will learn and practice modules such as poetry writing, short fiction, genre fiction, and experimental writing. Strict form and free verse writing is built in to develop your ear for voice and eye for picture. You’ll also explore the craft behind digital forms of writing, such as blogging.

Web development

From traditional websites to the latest apps, you’ll learn the technologies and skills you need to be successful in this fast-growing industry. This course reinforces your specialist knowledge in the design and development of complete stack for websites and web applications, covering DevOps, database design, as well as modern tools. You will learn key aspects of web development and programming, from front-end interactive design to the main skeleton and database structures.

At the same time, you will apply and develop your skills in HTML, CSS, javascript, PHP and User Experience (UX) through hands-on training in small classes. As an IT professional, you might be involved in the development of business protocols and processes such as databases and backup systems, as well as IT applications to support them.
