Back in 2019, Bugatti unveiled The Black Car, an incredible Chiron-a unique piece inspired by the lost Type 57 SC Atlantic. It was said to be the most expensive car ever sold at the time, but the car on display at the Geneva Motor Show wasn’t the last car – it was just a designer model with no interior. Now, two years later, production of The Black Car is complete and ready for delivery, and it’s glorious.

Importantly, the car’s spectacular proportions have remained intact, and they might even have improved. As it is based on the Chiron, The Black Car has its 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine mounted behind the seats, but it has an elongated hood that gives the car the proportions of a front-engined GT and rear wheel drive. The production car retains the prototype’s sharp windshield, although the A-pillars aren’t as flush as the car shares its glass and pillars with the Chiron. Unfortunately, this also means that it loses the center wiper from the prototype.

Some details are slightly different, mainly due to the feasibility of production. The fuel tank cap on the prototype was on the rear hips, but in the production model it is located in front of the scoops at the rear of the side windows, in the same location as the Chiron. The angled front fender vent has been moved onto the door itself instead of the door seam forming the edge of the vent, and there is a new vertical vent just behind the front wheel arches. But impressively, pretty much all of the car’s trim lines have remained the same.

The front is pretty much the same. The headlights have the same intricate LED design, consisting of 25 individually milled pieces on each side, although there is a new recessed lower section housing the main lights. The huge horseshoe grille and giant air intakes of the production model are present, as is the patterned ventilation on the hood. The whole grille mesh has been 3D printed, and it looks amazing. As on the prototype, the production model has a large panel covering the engine, which is perforated with the same pattern as the front cover and has an aluminum spine detail, although it gains additional ventilation on the roof and the end of the rear deck.

This rear end is even more dramatic.


This rear end is dominated by a flowing LED tail light that follows the outline of the open rear end, and the vents and diffusers are identical to the prototype. The production car still has those six huge tailpipes, a nod to the original Atlantic, but unfortunately the Bugatti script on the rear doesn’t seem to light up. The wheels have the same complex design, but they lose the central locking mechanism in favor of the normal lug nuts, and there are no more stickers on the tires. There’s another major difference: while the entire prototype body was finished in exposed black carbon fiber, the production La Car Noire is covered in deep black paint.

Bugatti hasn’t posted any photos of the interior, but a spokesperson told us that it basically looks like the one in the Chiron – due to safety regulations the company isn’t in a position to change much – thing. But there are a few special details like a rosewood gearshift and drive mode switch and unique turned aluminum trim, and the interior is trimmed in rich tan brown leather.

Some details are slightly different, such as the positioning of the fuel tank.


The development process of La Car Noire was no different from a regular Bugatti production model despite the two-year delay. Massive changes to the wheelbase, bodywork and cooling system forced the car to undergo extensive testing in digital simulators, wind tunnels, on test tracks and testing grounds, and on roads. real. Each new component had to be rigorously measured and tested, and the car even had to meet safety regulations in the event of an accident.

The Black Car was not ordered by a customer as is the case with bodied cars from brands like Rolls-Royce. Instead, the idea for the car came from the designers and executives at Bugatti, and when the idea was presented to a long-time customer and fan of the company, he immediately accepted the offer. purchase of the car. (The owner has also ordered a Divo in a corresponding specification.) While The Black Car was initially set to cost $ 12.5 million, Bugatti said the final sale price was $ 13.4 million before taxes.
